Vintage test report

The MC-240 was a superbly designed and constructed amplifier with very impressive specifications. The middle member of a series of three McIntosh stereo power amplifiers from the early 1960s (MC-225, MC-240 and MC-275) it developed (as its name suggests) 40 watts RMS per channel. It could be used in stereo, twin amp or 80-watt mono mode (for a more detailed description of these operating modes, please read the 1961 High Fidelity Magazine test report by clicking on the link at the left).

The massive bifilar output transformers sat atop a chrome-plated chassis with two rows of valves running alongside. Each channel utilised a pair of 6L6GC's running in 'Class B' mode.

Frequency response was claimed as being ± 0.1dB from 16Hz to 40kHz and distortion as less than 0·5% at rated power.

Price when new was $288.00 (with cage). These amplifiers are highly sought after today (although not quite to the extent of its bigger brother, the MC-275) and prices can range from $1,500.00 for a tatty but complete and working unit, to $3,500.00 or more for an 'as-new' example. Recently in the United Kingdom, an absolutely lovely example sold for £1,600.00.
