Specifications

The S-5500 was first released in 1961 as a 20-watt per channel stereo integrated amplifier with each channel using a pair of 7591 beam-power output pentodes. Basically a low-wattage version of the S-5000, features included DC heated filaments and a special phasing circuit which could balance out vertical (rumble and noise) pickup when playing mono records with a stereo pickup.

The following year (1962) the model was improved upon with the release of the S-5500ii. Whilst similar in appearance, the new version had an increased power output of 36 watts per channel and used 7868 Novar output pentodes, making it closer to the now-redundant S-5000ii. This was followed in 1963 by the S-5500iii and the final version in 1965 - the S-5500iv.

The S-5500iv was rated at 40 watts per channel (double the original version) and featured an added front panel control for phono gain . The chassis was restyled with the output transformers grouped at the rear with the mains transformer. The input panel was also re-designed (see pictures at right).

Prices when new:
S-5500 - $149.50 ($5 for case)
S-5500ii - $164.50 ($5 for case)
S-5500iii - no data available
S-5500iv - $$179.70 ($7.50 for case)

Today there doesn't seem to be much difference in value between the various versions. Internet auction prices typically start at around $150 for a reasonable looking, working example with prices hitting the $350 mark for pristine or restored versions.
